What is tramadol, and how is it used?
Tramadol is a medicine used to treat moderate to severe pain in adults. It comes in tablet or capsule form and is available by prescription only. It is often prescribed when other pain relievers have not been effective. Tramadol is made from synthetic opioid medications and a monoamine reuptake inhibitor (MRI). Opioids act on the opioid centers of the brain, while MRI works by inhibiting norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake. The effect is to reduce pain while offsetting the depressant effects of opioids with the stimulant of MRI. The drug's opiate effect is about one-tenth that of morphine. For this reason, the drug is generally not effective exclusively in treating severe or persistent chronic pain.
